Things I love about Colorado...

Ever since I was a little girl my parents have taken me skiing out West every winter.  We took a few years off while I was in college and law school, but the tradition is once again going strong.  This year we packed our bags and went to Copper Mountain and Breckenridge (both about an hour to an hour and a half outside of Denver).  Now our trips to Colorado are definitely not food-based or food-motivated in any way.  We are there for the skiing and if we happen upon good food, so be it.  This year we happened to stumble on a few good restaurants that I thought bore mentioning.

More after the jump!

My favorite things to do/see/eat in Frisco and Breckenridge, Colorado:
  1.  Skiing (well duh).  Colorado has some of the best skiing in the USA.  I am really partial to Utah because I grew up skiing at Snowbird and Alta, but Colorado is pretty fantastic too.  While Copper Mountain doesn't make my list of must-ski mountains, Breckenridge is a pretty fantastic mountain and it has a wonderful little village to boot.  It has a lot of great terrain and when you buy a lift ticket for Breckenridge, you can use it at A Basin or Keystone too, which I think is awesome.  Other must-ski mountains nearby in Colorado include Vail and Beaver Creek.
  2. Prost.  We stumbled across Prost in downtown Frisco our first night in Colorado when we were looking for some place to eat.  I defaulted to my Yelp app on my iPad and thought Prost sounded pretty good so we decided to give it a shot.  Prost is a very simple German restaurant, with a small menu and communal picnic tables, but it has great sausages (the Prost Signature and the Elk Jalapeno Cheddar sausages were my favorites), homemade soft pretzels and an interesting draft beer selection.  The prices are also totally reasonable.
  3. Crepes A La Cart.  A few years ago a friend of mine who lives in Denver recommended this place to me and we have now gone there three times.  The line can be outrageous at times, but the crepes really are delicious.  I have tried the Parisian (Dijon mustard, ham and brie), the nutella strawberry, nutella banana, the Club (basically a club sandwich in a crepe), the vegetarian (white asparagus, mushrooms, spinach, lemon juice, evoo), the s'mores crepe (exactly what it sounds like)...  All of the crepes are great.  You have to suck it up and wait in line in the cold, but it is worth it.
  4. Breckenridge Brewery.  The food here is pretty solid - I really like their sweet potato fries and their salads, but I'm all about their happy hour.  From 3-6 pm they serve $2 pints and half price appetizers.  It is such a great way to end your day.
  5. Surefoot at Copper Mountain.  This sounds like an endorsement for Surefoot and/or custom fit boots and I guess in a way it is, but the guys at this Surefoot location were hands down the most helpful and friendly I have ever encountered.  They made numerous tweaks to our ski boots (both to my Surefoot custom boots and to Alex's non-Surefoot boots), served me bottled water while I waited, and answered endless questions from everyone who wandered in.
As far as food goes, the next time I find myself in Breckenridge I want to try Hearthstone, Twist and Relish.  We didn't have time to try them this trip, but I read articles about all three in the local Breckenridge magazine while I was there and I definitely want to try them in the future!

  1. Yay to skiing! We will definitely jive when it comes to that matter, Vicki! Skiing is just one of the daring sports I will never get bored with. No matter how long I’ve been doing it, there’s always a feeling of new thrills every time you glide through the snow.
